The site is designed to allow members to book their places at the various fixtures throughout the year, to see the results of each competition and keep up to date with the activities of the society.

There is also various information about the society that we hope may interest non-members who are looking for a Society to join.

History of the North Yorkshire Golfing Society.

The founder members were Mike Ripley (Secretary) Mike Ewing (President)

Hughie Lister (Captain) John Addinall (Treasurer), Roy Milner and Malcolm

Plowman.  They were all frequenters of Wigginton Squash Club.

The Society was called the NYGS for the simple reason that it would be

more impressive for golf clubs rather than the 'Black Bull GS' or something

similar.  It was agreed that the society radius of activity would be 50 miles of York.  The limit on members was set at 50 with the proviso that they should be members of recognised golf clubs.  The society became affiliated to the English Golf Union to enhance it's status.  Roy Milner claimed he suggested the logo which is basically the EGU logo (with a white not red rose) over crossed clubs.  The EGU who gave permission to use their emblem though a certain amount of bluster was used to bluff our way in saying we just wanted a white rose!

It was in early 1981 when it was agreed that the committee members would donate a trophy for each competition. Some of the originals have been replaced but the initial line-up was:

April - SPRING TROPHY (John Addinall)

May - BANDIT SHIELD (Mike Ewing) - this was dropped when we had a separate President's Day in May.

June - RYEDALE GOBLET (Mike Ripley)

July - LINTON TROPHY (Derek Hutchinson - captain that year now deceased)

August - PETER TUPLING 255 SHIELD (David Perkins) this has been replaced by Jim Marshall Memorial trophy.

Sept - CAPTAIN/PRESIDENTS DAY

Oct  CANMORE CUP (Hughie Lister) - named after his home course in Scotland

The Michael Cup was started in 1985 which was named in honour of two society stalwarts Michaels Ewing & Ripley. The original idea was that it should be like the Ryder Cup (foursomes am and fourball pm) and played at a course outside our usual radius and price range.  It was suggested we stay overnight but this didn't happen until 2000.  The competition is now firmly established as a Sunday / Monday event with an 18 hole round of four ball better-balls on each day.
